The story begins in 2015 during a crucial meeting between Olivier Pagès, co-founder and CEO of ffly4u, and a global player in the cable/ fiber industry. fly4u vision: The Internet of Things will improve the management of construction sites, avoid drums losses and thefts, those large reels surrounded by cable that we are used to seeing on construction sites.
However, fly4u wants to go further. Thanks to several work meetings with Nexans but also with Nexans’ customers operators, such as ENEDIS, several functionalities other than geolocation, seem to be critical and very valuable in the sector, especially the “residual cable length” functionality.
This functionality will allow Nexans’ customers to have new Key Performance Indicators for work in progress on construction sites. The only question is… how ? There is no existing device which is able to calculate the residual cable length on a drum!
Thanks to its innovative Edge AI Low Power® technology based on embedded Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning processes, fly4u has developed a proprietary solution which makes it possible to calculate the residual cable length on a drum at the end of the construction site. This is a new key indicator of construction site monitoring in real time. As a result, fly4u became, 5 years later, the European leader in the connected drums sector.
myDrum-by-fly4u vertical is the starting point of fly4u’s story. This business vertical approach has been developed on its all targeted markets: understanding of the business in collaboration with the users, identification of critical functions and technical implementation through this new innovative Edge AI Low Power® solution…
RTP (Returnable Transport Packaging) is a generic term and describes a big variety of different kind of packaging used in a huge amount to transport goods from A to B. End customers rarely see them, as they are mainly used in the upstream for many segments (e.g. automotive, retail, pharma, cosmetics, chemical industry, machinery). Pallets, Boxes, Crates, IBCs, Racks, ULDs are all over the place. The volume of RTPs is very high. For example, in Europe there are more than 800 Mil Pallets and 20 mil Large Boxes in the use. More than 700 Mil small crates are in daily use and need to be managed.
In logistics they play an important role. If they are not there where and when they should be, goods cannot be received or send. They take also over a crucial function to protect transported goods or enable the easy and secure loading of goods on trucks, trains, airplanes or ships.
This vertical is considered as very important by fly4u as the CEO has 2 decades of experience in this sector (ex. Deputy Director General of La Palette Rouge - LPR) and is supported by its Business Developer, which has as well decade of experience in RTPs working for the market and innovation leaders in this area. They both know the pains in this vertical, as they have seen the lack of transparency. You can’t manage what you do not measure is an old but true phrase. The mission of fly4u is to provide more transparency and business critical data through innovative technology (e.g. Edge Technology and embedded AI)
For high value containers (e.g. IBCs and FLCs) with high value contents (e.g. cosmetics, fragrances, concentrates) fly4u has developed solutions to provide business critical information. Beside standard information (position, temperature, shock) fly4 sensors can detect open/folded, washed/unwashed and temperature thresholds. This information can be seen as an “event” and can trigger next steps (e.g. picking up the unit, avoiding further temperature increase or green light to re-introduce into the logistic circle). As a consequence, turn rates of the RTPs are going up, goods are not lost due to too high temperature.
Consequently, fly4u offers to all RTP owners and renters, the first step in the digitalization of their services and helps to monetize these data. A trend which has been already confirmed in this sector. fly4u can support you to make this major change in your business step by step. First, it can help you through the identification of the RTP possible states, then make the link between the RTP and its content. You can plan better the ETA (estimated time of arrival of your goods) and follow the flow and status of the RTP and the goods.
mySkip solution is the result of a collaboration between fly4u technical teams and a global player in the recycling industry. fly4u developed the same process for mySkip than the one initiated for myDum vertical: a collaborative work with the customer’s operational team, identification of critical functionalities, implementation of a Proof Of Concept, deployment.
The result exceeded fly4u's expectations as well as those of its client. Ultimately, fly4u managed to digitalize the whole flow of skips which are being used on recycling centers under 2 types of industrial sites, through the development of very specific status of the skip in operation. The « Edge AI Low Power ® » technology developed by fly4u allowed to create, as for example, a filling alert which is a key functionality in this sector.
The final objectives are very diverse: identify the skip life cycle at dock/ off dock on different recycling centers, in movement and on disposal sites. This challenge has been taken up by fly4u thanks to a deep analysis of needs and a fruitful collaboration with the client’s teams. This approach made it possible to deploy functionalities beyond the initial perimeter. As a result, the recycling center’s activities have been completely digitalized trough the optimization of the recycling process which has therefore considerably improved the service to final users. It is a perfect example of value creation that fly4u has developed thanks to a business vertical approach.
As a consequence, fly4u is becoming one of the leaders of the European skips sector thanks to mySkip solution.
In the aeronautics sector, we have a large number of applications which are specific to this sector:
myTrailer vertical is the result of the following observation:
Trailers’ owners are not systematically the tractors’ owners so they do not have any systems to geolocate their trailers. They do not know where their trailers are located and what is their utilization rate.
fly4u solution allows not only to geolocate trailers but also to automatically detect peering between a trailer and a tractor. This “peering” functionality connects tractors and trailers owners and offers an affordable alternative to standard tractor telematics.
